![]() WWPD? And now, my 2010 Pirates roster . . .BRADENTON, Fla. -- As the Grapefruit League seasons nears the halfway mark, what to do with first baseman Jeff Clement and outfielder John Raynor are two of the major questions at Camp Jolly Roger these days. Clement has made the routine plays and even a few difficult ones at his new position. He also has had a number of good at-bats even if his .130 batting average doesn't reflect as much. That being said, Clement might benefit from a trip to the minor leagues, where he could learn the position and fine-tune his stroke in a more low-key environment. In that case, right fielder Garrett Jones moves move to first base, and reserve outfielder Ryan Church heads to right field. That's not a bad Plan B to have at this point. Raynor is a Rule 5 player, which means that, if he's a member of the 25-man roster, his former team (Florida Marlins) pockets the $50,000 claim fee. Otherwise, he has to be offered back to it. If the Marlins take him back, then the two sides split the $50,000 claim fee. Or more likely, they can work out a deal for him. Potential is the issue here. Raynor has outplayed Brandon Moss from here to Kissimmee this spring, but the debate is about whether the 26-year-old has maxed out already. If Jones move to first base, then it creates a spot for Raynor to prove himself. At the very least, his speed and defense provide options that the team hasn't had off the bench in recent years. The final spot in the rotation is said to be open, but it's Kevin Hart's to lose right now. If there's something to be had from the John Grabow trade, then the 27-year old has the most potential to do it. The team almost certainly will head north with seven relievers, at least one of whom will be left-handed. In southpaws Javier Lopez and Jack Taschner, each of whom has been lights-out this spring, it has two options at that side. The only question is who replaces Octavio Dotel and/or Joel Hanrahan if one or both can't answer the bell. Veterans Brian Bass and Vinnie Chulk are two reasonable options. Except for one wind-blown home run, they've put up nothing but zeros this spring. And now, my 2010 Pittsburgh Pirates . . . Catchers Ryan Doumit: Veteran is overdue for a healthy break. Jason Jaramillo: All suited up, no place to go. Infielders Ronny Cedeno: Has hit .235 as a starter, .304 as a reserve in his career. Bobby Crosby: Should be in the line-up every day, not every other one. Akinori Iwamura: If healthy, he could be a valuable table-setter. Garrett Jones: Has to produce with higher expectations now. Andy LaRoche: Gold Glover in the field, question mark at the plate. Delwyn Young: Provides a much-needed bat off the bench. Outfielders Ryan Church: Left-handed bat, veteran leadership are pluses. Andrew McCutchen: Key to the offense at the lead-off spot. Lastings Milledge: He can hit, but can he hit for power? Brandon Moss: Only because he's out of options. A change of scenery could benefit both sides. John Raynor: Deserves a chance at the major league level. Starting pitchers Zach Duke: There's no better time for a break-through season. Kevin Hart: Has yet to show his pre-trade form of a year ago. Paul Maholm: See Duke, Zach. Charlie Morton: If he realizes how good he can be, then watch out. Ross Ohlendorf: Can he build off his final 10 starts of last season? Relief pitchers D.J. Carrasco: Just give him the darn ball already. Brendan Donnelly: May be one retweaked oblique from the closer role. Octavio Dotel: Team desperately needs him to be healthy, effective. Joel Hanrahan: If he's a no-go, then Vinnie Chulk gets the call. Javier Lopez: Which model will show up – '08 or '09? Evan Meek: Has the stuff to be successful but lacks experience. Jack Taschner: Veteran southpaw has been Mr. K this spring.
