WWPD? And now, my 2010 Pirates roster . . .

BRADENTON, Fla. -- As the Grapefruit League seasons nears the halfway mark, what to do with first baseman Jeff Clement and outfielder John Raynor are two of the major questions at Camp Jolly Roger these days.

Clement has made the routine plays and even a few difficult ones at his new position. He also has had a number of good at-bats even if his .130 batting average doesn't reflect as much.

That being said, Clement might benefit from a trip to the minor leagues, where he could learn the position and fine-tune his stroke in a more low-key environment. In that case, right fielder Garrett Jones moves move to first base, and reserve outfielder Ryan Church heads to right field. That's not a bad Plan B to have at this point.

Raynor is a Rule 5 player, which means that, if he's a member of the 25-man roster, his former team (Florida Marlins) pockets the $50,000 claim fee. Otherwise, he has to be offered back to it. If the Marlins take him back, then the two sides split the $50,000 claim fee. Or more likely, they can work out a deal for him.

Potential is the issue here. Raynor has outplayed Brandon Moss from here to Kissimmee this spring, but the debate is about whether the 26-year-old has maxed out already. If Jones move to first base, then it creates a spot for Raynor to prove himself. At the very least, his speed and defense provide options that the team hasn't had off the bench in recent years.

The final spot in the rotation is said to be open, but it's Kevin Hart's to lose right now. If there's something to be had from the John Grabow trade, then the 27-year old has the most potential to do it.

The team almost certainly will head north with seven relievers, at least one of whom will be left-handed. In southpaws Javier Lopez and Jack Taschner, each of whom has been lights-out this spring, it has two options at that side.

The only question is who replaces Octavio Dotel and/or Joel Hanrahan if one or both can't answer the bell. Veterans Brian Bass and Vinnie Chulk are two reasonable options. Except for one wind-blown home run, they've put up nothing but zeros this spring.

And now, my 2010 Pittsburgh Pirates . . .

Catchers

Ryan Doumit: Veteran is overdue for a healthy break.

Jason Jaramillo: All suited up, no place to go.

Infielders

Ronny Cedeno: Has hit .235 as a starter, .304 as a reserve in his career.

Bobby Crosby: Should be in the line-up every day, not every other one.

Akinori Iwamura: If healthy, he could be a valuable table-setter.

Garrett Jones: Has to produce with higher expectations now.

Andy LaRoche: Gold Glover in the field, question mark at the plate.

Delwyn Young: Provides a much-needed bat off the bench.

Outfielders

Ryan Church: Left-handed bat, veteran leadership are pluses.

Andrew McCutchen: Key to the offense at the lead-off spot.

Lastings Milledge: He can hit, but can he hit for power?

Brandon Moss: Only because he's out of options. A change of scenery could benefit both sides.

John Raynor: Deserves a chance at the major league level.

Starting pitchers

Zach Duke: There's no better time for a break-through season.

Kevin Hart: Has yet to show his pre-trade form of a year ago.

Paul Maholm: See Duke, Zach.

Charlie Morton: If he realizes how good he can be, then watch out.

Ross Ohlendorf: Can he build off his final 10 starts of last season?

Relief pitchers

D.J. Carrasco: Just give him the darn ball already.

Brendan Donnelly: May be one retweaked oblique from the closer role.

Octavio Dotel: Team desperately needs him to be healthy, effective.

Joel Hanrahan: If he's a no-go, then Vinnie Chulk gets the call.

Javier Lopez: Which model will show up – '08 or '09?

Evan Meek: Has the stuff to be successful but lacks experience.

Jack Taschner: Veteran southpaw has been Mr. K this spring.

I know I've read that he does somewhere but don't have the link. I am sure, though, that this article wouldn't mention sending him down as an idea if he didn't have an option left.

are you 100% sure about that doumit because thats not what they said when the got him last year.they said he was out of options and they had to make sure about him before they call him up.

Serg444:

You forgot Ohlendorf, Tabata, Karstens and McCutchen to the Yankees for Marte and Nady.

FYI: Sanchez had two extra-base hits in 102 at-bats with the Giants last season. McClouth hit .257 for the Braves last season. Capps had a 5.80 ERA for the Pirates last season.

Serg, as far as Neal being accountable...check this article out on the Bay trade: ***********weei****/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/alex-speier/2010/03/20/why-trading-jason-bay-didnt-work-out-pirates-h?page=full . On Vazquez, he batted just under .300 in 2008. How would that not have been an upgrade if he continued to hit that well? You've got to take some risks. Lastings, if he doesn't completely live up to his potential, is as good of a player as Nyjer is. If he does? He's easily better. This team put everyone around Jack and Freddy for years. Why keep doing that at the price they wanted? Especially with their health, which is still an issue for both of them on their respective squads. As for Capps? He's given up 7 runs over 6 innings thus far in the spring. Yeah, spring numbers aren't the most important thing in the world, but that's pretty telling.

What GM doesn't like his own people? There isn't one.

Huntington is as accountable and accessible as any I have worked with in any sport -- MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL included.

You're right -- no team gets all the breaks. But if any team is due to get more than its fair share, the Pirates are the one.

Thanks for the input.

I said .500 isn't out of the question. That's not a prediction necessarily.

I look for Duke and Maholm to have their best seasons yet. Ohlendorf and Morton have the stuff to become consistent winners. The fifth spot is a problem right now, but I like what I see of Lincoln this spring. Give him a few months to develop an off-speed pitch, and he may be the answer. And the bullpen could be very good if Dotel is healthy.

I don't expect the offense to put up big numbers. I envision lots of low-scoring, one-run games this season. In a weak division, that's not a bad thing.

Thanks for the input.

If this team pitches to its potential, .500 isn't out of the question. This is the National League Central we're talkin' about here, remember?

The options appear to be Jones-Crosby and Clement-Crosby right now.

Crosby has been adequate at first base, but similar to Clement, he's somewhat new to the position.

Thanks for the input.

I think it's a matter of historical fact that Adam LaRoche was traded to the Red Sox. The question is how he got into this story as a "Gold Glover in the field, a question mark at the plate." And where did Andy LaRoche go?

Sorry for that double post. But I agree with your assessment totally, I was just wondering if Crosby as a regular at first to develop Clement at AAA was a thought from the higher ups. I also prefer a healthy Crosby at short, but it seems that the brass is more content with Cedeno than they are with Clement in the line-up at this point.

Does it mean anything other than just solidifying himself as a backup that Crosby has seemed to get a decent amount of time at first base?

JohnLease:

Yes, you probably missed it. Adam LaRoche was traded to the Boston Red Sox in return for Argenis Diaz and Hunter Stickland last season.

Relax. Even fans need spring training.

Glad I could be of help.

DoumitDinger:

The higher-ups view Crosby as a right-handed option at first base. That's not good news for Steve Pearce, who has yet to make an impression this spring.

Personally, I prefer Crosby at shortstop with Ronny Cedeno in a back-up role. A right-handed first baseman-right fielder that can hit for power is needed here, in my opinion.

Thanks for the input.
