Hidden Numbers Speak for d'Arnaud, HarrisonAccording to the won-loss records, these have been best options by position in the field (minimum: 10 decisions). Catcher: Chris Snyder (16-14) and Michael McKenry (26-24). First base: Lyle Overbay (48-45). Second base: Neil Walker (63-74). Shortstop: Chase d'Arnaud (10-8). Third base: Josh Harrison (22-18). Left field: Jose Tabata (37-33). Center field: Andrew McCutchen (62-74). Right field: Matt Diaz (20-17). These have been the best options by position in the batting order: 1. Alex Presley (15-11). 2. Harrison (13-8) and d'Arnaud (13-9). 3. Garrett Jones (16-11). 4. Andrew McCutchen (17-10). 5. Diaz (10-5). 6. Snyder (10-3). 7. Harrison (9-8). 8. Ronny Cedeno (34-34). The numbers can mean a lot of things or absolutely nothing. Here's my take: 1) the loss of a healthy Snyder has set the team back more than many of us realize; 2) McKenry isn't a liability behind the plate; 3) d'Arnaud and Harrison have positive intangibles that extend beyond their individual statistics; and 4) maybe Diaz isn't so bad, after all.
