Third baseman Pedro Alvarez, the Pirates' first-round draft pick last year, was promoted to Class AA Altoona from high Class A Lynchburg on Sunday night.

Alvarez, the No. 2 overall selection, received a four-year, $6,335,000 major-league contract last September after protracted negotiations.

I do like the new front office's approach to drafting players that are the most major league ready. I like how Alvarez projects and he should arrive to the majors about the same time as the rest of high-end prospects in the system. The only thing I am disapointed in is the fact that since Alvarez was drafted, I have heard very little regarding that status of Neil Walker. With Andy LaRoche swinging the bat and the large contract of Alvarez, it seems that Walker will have a very difficult time cracking the lineup at third base. He has struggled in AAA, but at some point the organization needs to decide what to do with him or risk wasting yet another 1st round pick.

THIS IS A GOOD MOVE. ALVAREZ WILL SEE BETTER PITCHES IN THIS LEAGUE AND WILL PROVE THAT A LOT OF THOSE STRIKEOUTS AT LYNCHBURG WERE THE RESULT OF HIS IMPATIENCE, NOT HIS LACK OF STRIKE ZONE KNOWLEDGE. IMO, PEDRO WILL BE A GOOD POWER HITTER(HIGH OPS+) WITH A BETTER THAN LEAGUE AVERAGE IN BATTING AVERAGE THOUGH NOT A TOP 20 BA PLAYER. AS FAR AS A FIELDER, HE MUST BE BETTER PREPARED ABD SHOW A LOT OF IMPROVEMENT WHETHER HE STAYS AT THIRD(I HOPE!)OR MOVES TO 1ST
